State Sen. Dan Gelber, whose district includes Aventura and Sunny Isles Beach, has pulled out of the race to fill the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by the retirement of Mel Martinez.

In speaking at a Democratic Party event Saturday night, Gelber cited party unity as the determining factor in his decision, The Associated Press reported. He was facing a tough primary fight with Rep. Kendrick Meek.

Gov. Charlie Crist and former House Speaker Marco Rubio are seeking the Republican nomination.

Gelber, a former assistant U.S. attorney, said he is contemplating running for another post, possibly state attorney general.
