It’s official: New school will be Zo High
The Miami-Dade School Board ended months of contentious disagreement over the name of its new North Miami high school -- and the process for selecting that name -- by voting June 16 to honor Alonzo and Tracy Mourning.
The school, which will be the next step for graduates of Sunny Isles Beach Community School among others, will officially be known as the Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High School Biscayne Bay Campus. Up to this point, it had been known as QQQ.
The decision to name the school after the former Miami Heat basketball star and his wife, who is active in charitable work, comes despite a City of North Miami recommendation that the school be named after former U.S. attorney general Janet Reno. Others had offered geographic names -- like OletaRiver Senior High -- or even current school board members -- as in Martin Karp Senior High, after the area's school board delegate and head of the naming committee. But with the school scheduled to open in 10 weeks, it was time to compromise and that's just what the board did in honoring the popular Mournings.
