Sunshine State, eh? Two storms blast area
It's been a soggy June across South Florida. The early start to summer's routine of daily afternoon showers turned drought conditions into saturated ground.
But June 23rd's thunderstorm doubleheader was unusual even to long-time Floridians.
The noisy morning storm dumped almost 4 inches of rain on Aventura, turning parts of Country Club drive into a wave pool. In Sunny Isles Beach, the Community School became an island as rising waters sloshed over the curbs.
Wind gusts approaching 70 mph racked LandShark Stadium, where the Marlins were preparing to open a series with the Baltimore Orioles. About 100 flights were delayed or cancelled at Miami International Airport.
InĀ South Beach, intersections and parking garages were flooded again, although Tuesday's rainfall totals didn't rival the reported 9 inches that fell June 5.
Meteorologists assured this wasn't a tropical storm, little comfort to drivers dodging fallen plam fronds in roadways. But forecasters were warning that tropical moisture could arrive by the weekend, adding to a string of stormy days.
Note to snowbirds grousing about wet weather in the Northeast: You're still ahead of the game.
