July 4 choice: Fireworks, food or both?
Area residents looking for a fun way to celebrate America's birthday have some attractive choices.
Aventura will stage its 14th annual fireworks display Saturday night above the Fairmont at Turnberry golf course. The $25,000 show by Zambelli International, one of the biggest names in the field, is expected to start at 9 p.m. and run 25 to 30 minutes.
The best viewing spots are along Country Club Drive.
The event has had great luck with the weather over the years. Just once -- in 1997 -- has the show been postponed. Last year, rain delayed the start by about half an hour.
There's no formula to making the go/no-go call, explains Community Services Director Robert Sherman. If the weather data suggests a storm will move on, the show will wait. If the weather just won't cooperate, they'll try again July 5.
The event is co-sponsored by the Fairmont at Turnberry.
Zambelli's credentials include shows as part of New York City's New Year's Eve celebration, Pittsburgh's 250th birthday, numerous TV programs and international competitions. The firm does about 3,500 shows a year, half on July 4.
Sunny Isles beach, which usually eschews July 4 celebrations, is making an exception this year by staging its rededication of Sen. Gwen Margolis Park on July 4.
The free event will run 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the park, 17815 North Bay Road. Plans call for games, family fun, food, music and a special butterfly dedication.
Nearby, Hallandale Beach will stage a kid-friendly event July 4 at South City Beach, just south of Hallandale Beach Boulevard, from noon until 6 p.m.
Gulfstream Park will get an early start by holding its fireworks July 3 at 9 p.m. Festivities get started at 5 p.m. with music, contests and food, including an All-American themed buffet at the Ten Palms restaurant.
