Arts Center moving cautiously toward opening night
Someday, when the economy improves, the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center may carry the name of a corporate sponsor who paid upwards of $2 million for the honor.
Someday, perhaps as early as November, 2010, the new 325-seat theater will host at least a three-week run of an off-Broadway play.
On New Year’s Eve, 2010, the center will be host to a comedy gala.
But for the next 12 months, the plan for the center going up at the east end of 188th Street is to take it slow and make sure all the kinks are shaken out before its grand opening in the fall of 2010.
At a meeting July 13, the center’s citizen advisory board was briefed on construction progress, budget and staffing plans and program hopes and dreams.
The anticipated $420,000 budget for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1 will cover two full-time employees – a general manager and an events manager. A technical manager will be budgeted for six months and a box office manager will be added in August 2010. But anticipated revenue for the fiscal year is just $25,000 with better days ahead in fiscal 2011.
Once the city takes possession of the finished building next April, technical testing and limited student programs will be the first order of business. And pianist Damira (Mira) Feldman suggested staging a summer marathon featuring local musicians.
But for-profit programming won’t get rolling until fall 2010 when Russian and Israeli cultural events, recitals, even movies are likely. Wine tastings and catered events in the north-side courtyard will be able to accommodate up to 800.
A buy-a-brick campaign and endowment programs are envisioned as fundraisers.
