Clinton tells Haitian conference of new investment efforts

Days after being hailed as a hero for his role in freeing two American journalists taken captive by North Korea, Bill Clinton came to Sunny Isles Beach Sunday and focused his attention on another part of the world.

The former president was the closing day keynoter -- along with Haitian Prime Minister Michelle Pierre-Louis --  for the four-day Haitian Diaspora Unity Conference at the Trump International Resort. Since being named the United Nation’s envoy to Haiti, Clinton has been raising funds and strategizing ways to help the troubled island nation. And he had news of hope for the delegates.

The Soros Economic Development Fund has launched an equity fund with an initial commitment of $25 million, a figure that easily could climb to $150 million, Clinton said. And, in October, he’ll lead a trade mission which will give international investors a first-hand look at opportunities in Haiti. The focus will be on energy and tourism, manufacturing and agriculture ventures.

Clinton urged delegates to keep up the pressure on the international community to help Haiti escape a cycle of poverty and political instability. In June, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund forgave $1.2 billion of the nation's debt.

The conference -- the second annual -- brought together elements of the emigrant community who send over a billion dollars to relatives in Haiti each year. That sum accounts for about a third of the nation’s gross domestic product.
