A mother and daughter were killed Sunday evening when their mini-van backed through a wooden fence and plunged into a canal at NE 185^th Street in Aventura.

Aventura police were first on the scene about 8 p.m. but, a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesman said, the water behind the Aventi Townhomes complex is too deep at that point for police officers to rescue the pair.

Divers from MDFR arrived a few minutes later and pulled the pair from the water. They were taken to Aventura Hospital and Medical Center where they were pronounced dead.

The victims were identified as Edith Menage, 44, and Narcera Philogene, 21.
