Arts center topping-off event Dec. 2

Construction of Aventura’s Arts and Cultural Center has reached the point that the city is planning a topping-off celebration for Dec. 2.

In updating city commissioners Sept. 17 on progress of the NE 188th Street facility, City Manager Eric Soroka said Suffolk Construction, the contractor on the project, is sponsoring the ceremony that marks the point at which work reaches its highest point. Completion is expected in the spring with a soft opening planned for summer.

Soroka also outlined plans for a commemorative brick program that would raise a quarter-million-dollar endowment fund for the center. The plan envisions selling 3,000 bricks at $125 each. The brick would be engraved with the purchaser’s name and would line a Walk of Arts. Mayor Susan Gottlieb applauded the idea but challenged the pricing, arguing other centers have been charging more.

An honor roll program is also being discussed, Soroka said. Individual and corporate donors of $1,000 to $5,000 would be recognized with plaques on a wall inside the center.

A variety of annual membership plans that including preferred ticketing are also in the discussion stage, although decisions will have to wait until there’s a better sense of the center’s events schedule.
