Aventura bank closed by feds
Another week, another Aventura bank changes names. But this one is different.
The federal office of the Controller of the Currency closed Republic Federal Bank on Friday and named the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. as the receiver, setting off a string of events that ended up with First United Bank of Boca Raton taking over the four Republic Federal offices including one at 19125 Biscayne Blvd. in Aventura.
Deposits are safe up to $250,000 per account, the FDIC says, and the offices will reopen Monday under the new name. It is unclear what will become of the employees. But it is clear that FDIC will have to swallow an estimated $122 million in losses on the transaction.
Republic Federal, which began life in 1979 as Hemisphere National Bank, becomes the 13th Florida bank to be closed by federal officials this year. It listed assets of $433 million and $352.7 million in deposits as of Sept. 30.
